Brief Overview of our Christian Science Church :
In 1899, a few students of Christian Science began meeting in private homes to read
the Christian Science Bible Lesson-Sermon. Regular Christian Science Sunday
services were held at various locations, beginning in 1902. Encouragement came to
the little band in the spring of 1903 when a practitioner arrived in Tampa. A public
meeting place was secured and the group was recognized by The Mother Church, in
August of that year, as a Christian Science Society.
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Tampa, was organized with eighteen members in
April 1908. Services were held in different locations until January 1913, when the
Christian Church edifice at the corner of Florida Avenue and Henderson Street was
bought.
As the membership grew, a larger auditorium became necessary. To accomplish this,
the property was sold in 1920, and the lot upon which the present structure stands
was purchased. Christian Science Services were held in the Knights of Pythias Hall
until the completion of the Christian Science Sunday School auditorium in June 1923.
On January 24, 1926, the first Christian Science church service was held in the
completed edifice. Dedication services were held on March 5, 1944.
